Accessibility

Key West Sun Shirts wants everyone to be able to browse and buy on this site, whatever device or assistive technology they use. We work to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, and we test the site with a keyboard, screen readers and automated tools as part of ongoing development.

Conformance status

This website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. “Partially conformant” means that most of the content conforms fully and the remaining exceptions are listed below. Every page we build ourselves — home, product listings, product pages, cart, checkout and order confirmation — is tested before it goes live.

What we have done

  • Contrast: text and controls meet at least a 4.5:1 contrast ratio against their background, including buttons, form fields, filter headings and the disabled state of “Add to cart”.
  • Keyboard: everything can be operated without a mouse — menus and dropdowns, the colour and size swatches (Enter or Space to choose), quantity, add to cart, cart, checkout and the account pages. Skip links go straight to the navigation and to the content.
  • Visible focus: every focused control shows a 3 px turquoise outline, and the mobile “Add to cart” bar never covers the control you are on.
  • Target size: links, buttons and swatches are at least 24 × 24 CSS pixels with clear space around them.
  • Pop-ups: the “what stopped you?” survey is a proper dialog — focus moves into it, stays inside it, Escape closes it, and focus returns to where you were. The customer-rating details panel behaves the same way.
  • Structure: one H1 per page, headings in order, landmarks for header, navigation, main content and footer, and a visually hidden heading before each product grid and filter panel.
  • Forms: every field has a visible label (or an equivalent accessible name), required fields are announced, errors are described in text next to the field, and address and card fields use autocomplete hints.
  • Images and tables: product photos carry descriptive alternative text, decorative images are hidden from assistive technology, and the size chart uses real column and row headers.
  • Text: body text is 16 px or larger, nothing is smaller than 14 px, the page works at 200% zoom and with a 320 px-wide viewport without horizontal scrolling, and information is never conveyed by colour alone.
  • Help is where you expect it: the Help menu and the footer links appear in the same place on every page.
  • No overlays: we do not use accessibility “overlay” widgets; we fix the underlying code instead.

Known limitations

Some parts of the site come from third parties and we cannot change their code directly. We check each new release and have raised these with the vendors.

  • Card payment fields: the card number, expiry and CVC boxes are secure frames served by our payment processor. They work with a keyboard and screen readers, but automated checkers report three hidden helper inputs inside those frames. The fields themselves are labelled and announced correctly.
  • Review badges (Google Customer Reviews, Trustpilot): these badges arrive without an accessible title; we add one on the page, but the content inside the badge is controlled by the provider.
  • Product filters on small screens: the filter panel opens as a dialog from the “Filters” control; on some screen readers the panel is announced only after it has finished opening.
  • Older product photos: alternative text on a small number of older product images is still being reviewed for accuracy.

How we test

  • Automated checks with axe-core (via Lighthouse 12) on every page type — home, shop, categories, collections, activity hubs, product pages, search, cart (empty and with items), checkout, order confirmation, account, contact, FAQ, size guide, guides and this page.
  • Manual keyboard testing in Chrome, Safari and Firefox on desktop and on a 390 px-wide phone layout.
  • Screen-reader spot checks with VoiceOver (macOS/iOS).

Technical information

Accessibility of this site relies on HTML, CSS, JavaScript and WAI-ARIA, and on the accessibility features of your browser and assistive technology. The site is built on WordPress and WooCommerce; when a WordPress or WooCommerce update changes markup, we re-test the affected pages.
